Wonderland
Wonderland was a student written re-imagining of Alice in Wonderland, complete with an Italian American gangster for Peter Rabbit, a set created by interpretive dancers, and a host of living cards. It was one of the society's most ambitious projects, and as well as being responsible for Publicity, I was Artistic Director.
Flyers
Edited from an original photograph of our Mad Hatter, this poster was designed to maintain a specific colour scheme that would be used for our visualisation of the Rabbit Hole. The cards are a miniaturised version of one of the actors' cards, which were created through edited photographs. The Cheshire Cat's smile was taken from a photograph of the puppet we used for the show.
Costumes
Working with an Assistant Artistic Director, the costumes were a combination of elements we could afford to hire and what we could make ourselves. The Mad Hatter's costume was entirely created from making additions to clothes found in charity shops. I wanted to play on the twist in Wonderland that the Mad Hatter at the end of the play is revealed to be the lost King. His costume consisted of a dress shirt and fancy silk dressing gown, with added Hatter elements, as if he had to run from the Queen in the night and hasn't changed since. Alice and the Queen of Hearts wore costumes that were rented, and makeup was by Adele O'Callaghan.
Cards: Headshots & Costumes
To create living cards, I took photographs of each of the actors and edited their photos through Photoshop filters, maintaining the purple & green colour scheme. These were used as the Headshots, and then printed and glued to foam board for the costumes.
They were structurally troublesome, so the velvet and sequin straps were eventually secured with Velcro, sellotape and wall glue! The costumes also included foam sheet ruffs with pink hearts to reflect the card's ownership to the Queen of Hearts. These were inspired by the ruffs used on the Cards in the production of the Alice in Wonderland by the Royal Opera House.
