Do you want people to read your research?

Your academic research is vitally important in furthering our understanding of society and the world. It’s also, by necessity, rigorous and complex.

And that’s where the problem comes in…Most people don’t read research.

But often, it’s because they can’t: from academic paywalls to academic language, accessing research is difficult for many.

You can change that.

Research that makes sense to the people it’s about

Create an easy to understand, visually alluring research summary… that the people you’re researching can actually read!

Andy was fantastic to work with from start to finish. He has an amazing ability to absorb and visualise complex research findings, producing beautifully designed summaries whilst always keeping an eye on accessibility and clarity. Having worked with him on multiple projects, I can safely say he delivers the work he promises, on schedule.
— Dr Kate Cooper, University of Bath

How did this start?

Dr. Kate Cooper at the University of Bath and her autistic research interest group came up with the idea and approached me to execute it. So I took her simple language research summary and structured, designed and illustrated it to be easily understandable for autistic folks.

Once other researchers saw the benefit of having a slick, publicly accessible end product, word got round… and I’ve not looked back since!

What are your credentials?

I studied Sociology at the University of Bath, and Illustration at Oxford Brookes University. I was awarded the Peter Cressy prize for the highest programme average on my Sociology cohort, so I know more than just how to make things look nice!

I am also considering the epistemological, phenomenological and identity politics implicated in how I structure the research and who I represent. My situated viewpoint is that of a white, middle class, Christian, Queer, Autistic trans man.

How much does it cost?

Often I’m able to work around the budget you have in your funding, and I’m happy to give you a quote to include in a funding application.

Here’s how it works

  1. You do some excellent work, be it a preliminary project to understand possible research areas or a 6 year rigorous multitudinal study

  2. You write up a research summary (including quotes/ key metrics if relevant) and decide how you want it presented: poster, booklet, document, presentation…

  3. This is where I come in! I will take your research summary either as is, or offer suggestions for readability and legibility to ensure it’s a riveting read

  4. Once we’ve approved the text, I’ll set it out in a visually appealing, easy to read way and add unique, hand drawn illustrations directly relevant to what’s written in the text

  5. You will then receive the finished product in the form of your choosing. You’ll also get each individual drawing as it’s own file, which you are then free to use on any presentations, websites or further work you do

You’ll be in good company

So far I’ve worked with many academics from the University of Bath, Cardiff University, Cardiff Metropolitan University and the University of Bristol.
